A single panic attack is not the same as panic disorder. Treat with psychological intervention.

  • General support, explanation and reassurance, CBT (recommended)

  • Stress management

  • Rebreathe into cupped hands or a paper bag if hyperventilating

  • Initial treatment of the acute attack (only if necessary, usually rarely):

    • – oxazepam 15–30 mg (o) or

    • – diazepam 5 mg (o)

Prophylaxis for recurrent attacks (panic disorder)

Consider:

  • SSRI antidepressants or

  • venlafaxine CR 75–225 mg
