A spreading infection of the skin involving subcutaneous fat (compare with erysipelas ( 237), which involves upper dermis). Mainly caused by GABHS and S. aureus. Commonly affects legs of elderly ( 344). A special mutant variety is ‘flesh-eating’ GABHS, which causes localised destruction of tissue.

Treatment Penicillin for GABHS and di(flu)cloxacillin for S. aureus. Attend to underlying cause (e.g. skin ulcer).
