Substance: Ferric carboxymaltose (Ferinject®) available as 100 mg/2 mL, 500 mg/10 mL ampoules

Criteria: Symptomatic iron deficiency: anaemia (Hb <100 and ferritin <20 µg/L)

Failed trial oral iron for iron deficiency anaemia and persistent anaemia
++
Anaemia of chronic disease e.g. chronic kidney failure
++
Precautions: Obtain specialist advice and recommendation

History of allergic disorders

Contraindications: Hypophosphataemia

0.9% (N) saline 100 mL bags

20 mL ampoule saline flush

Butterfly cannulas 21 and 23g

NB: functional accessible resuscitation equipment, drugs (adrenaline and hydrocortisone) and oxygen

Dosing regimen (simplified):
++
maximum single dose of Ferinject®: patients with body weight < 35 kg–500 mg
++
body weight ≥ 35 kg–1000 kg
++
Max. single dose should not exceed 1000 mg (20 mL)/day nor once a week
++
NB: if adverse effects develop cease infusion immediately and monitor vital signs
++
